Childrens Bedroom Design

a child's bedroom

Children's Bedroom Design Ideas - I really believe that most childrens bedrooms are put together very badly ...

... yet with relatively little thought a child's bedroom can be much improved.

And more importantly, it is possible to do this at very little cost.

Think about colour schemes, some basic furniture, some pictures for the wall, a decent bed ... and you are pretty much there.

This page is decorated with some vintage bedroom pictures as I believe pictures should be about giving a bit of inspiration rather than trying to copy the design from a glossy magazine - it just never seems to quite work out when you try that!

Thinking your Child's Bedroom through...

I think a colour scheme is a good place to start, here I can make a guarantee ...

if you have a daughter she will want purple, I can't be quite so certain what a boy would choose, but if he is small, doubtless something equally garish :)

* I've included these pics of old fashioned toddlers because they looked so sweet!

Maybe allow an alcove to be coloured as your child has chosen and somehow fit it into the overall scheme.

Child's Bed

The most important part of the bedroom is of course the bed - if space is tight or if you have children sharing a room then this informs the way you have to lay the room out.

Bunk Beds can be a solution, I think they work well, as kids generally think bunk beds are fun and cool, but there can also be a dispute about who sleeps where, in this case you have to be firm and allocate the position, I'm sure you can work out a subtle way of doing this.

Most stores do an excellent range of children's beds and there are many bargains to be found online of course - but you're already well familiar with that or else you wouldn't be here reading this!

Bedding is a great area for compromise, most mothers would like beautiful crisp white linen on their kids bed, most kids want to have a brightly coloured duvet depicting some kind of tv show, football team or other kiddie cult icon!

Actually this is OK, really it is - kids imagery on the duvet cover does give the room a real child like feel and will pretty much keep junior happy, thus allowing you to decorate the room with your own ideas.

I've shown these interesting old designs, pics on the right - some space saving ideas from the old days, perhaps not such old days ... only mere generation or two ago I should think.

They are an interesting reminder of how there is no really new ideas around, just a reworking of old themes...

Bedroom storage and space saving ideas are very important though, kids toys seem to absolutely multiply all by themselves these days.

Children's Bedroom Furniture - I like to have at least a little desk and chair in the room if at all possible, children love furniture built to their size, makes them feel special.

Choosing really nice bedding is important, the value of quality linen can't be underestimated, although children have a tendancy to want themed duvet covers if given a chance!!

Large boxes or some kind of storage system for putting toys away.

Pictures are really important, they help to give depth to a room, add colour and substance too.

Lighting with a master switch by the door is handy, that way you can control even the sidelights from one convenient spot.
